10 things to love about being pregnant

Pregnancy is like a rollercoaster; there are always plenty of ups and downs.

Aside from the miserable side effects like morning sickness, uncomfortable sleepless nights and body pains, there are conversely some amazing things about being pregnant.

Here are a few things to love about being pregnant

1 – excuses

With a growing bump, you’ve got the perfect excuse for almost anything, even for getting out of the housework. You can say goodbye to the housework and chores with a simple “I don’t feel up to it” – you will no longer have to put the bins out. It’s also the best excuse to give yourself some extra pampering. Say hello to long scented baths and relaxing massages!

2 – attention & love

For the coming months you are guaranteed to be getting a lot more attention from those around you. You’ll be taken care of by your family, friends and partner and they will help make this journey go by smoother for you.

 3 – VIP treatment

Not only will you be receiving extra care from loved ones and friends, the outside world will take plenty of notice too. Look forward to plenty of smiles and kind gestures from total strangers. From people holding the door for you, offering their seats to you and carrying heavy things for you – you’ll be feeling very special in no time.

4 – good hair & nails

Pregnancy hormones can result in a fabulous head of hair and fingernails during your pregnancy. Many people notice a change in the health of their hair, which makes it stronger and glossier than ever before!

5 – boobs

Did we mention cleavage? In the early stages of pregnancy, your breasts tend to grow bigger as blood flow increases, breast tissue changes and milk ducts form. That’s why it’s common for breasts to go up by a cup size or two during pregnancy. For those who were born with smaller boobs, it’s your chance to flaunt them and see how the other half live!

6 – food, food and more food

Once the morning sickness subsides and the cravings kick in – you’ll be loving life! Although you do not have to eat for two, you can indulge in your cravings with little guilt or worry!

7 – naps

These are practically a requirement for all pregnant women. You no longer have to feel guilty about sneaking in a few refreshing naps during the daytime!

8 – first moments

You’ll never forget those first few moments. From seeing them on an ultrasound scan, those first little kicks and squirms, a hiccup – there will never be a dull moment when it comes to the new life inside of you.

9 – shopping

Who doesn’t love shopping? You’ll have plenty of time to help choose some adorable little baby clothes, new furniture and decorate the nursery in time for the arrival of the awaited little one.

10 – anticipation

The anticipation keeps it exciting. From the beginning to the end, there are plenty of fun and nervous moments. From keeping it a secret, the look of excitement and surprise when you tell your family, finding out the gender, and picking out a name – there are endless joyful moments during a pregnancy.

ingredient of the month – pomegranate extract

If you drink pomegranate juice daily or eat a lot of pomegranate seeds, then you could be slowing the aging process. Pomegranate, a true super food, is loaded with hydrating, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, to help retain the skin’s moisture, fight sun and environmental damage, and minimise the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. Also known for its cell regenerative abilities, this wonder fruit promotes the production of collagen and elastin, to firm and plump the skin.

Our ‘blossoms in spring illuminating day cream’ contains collagen-enhancing argan leaf to promote firmness, whilst passionflower, pomegranate and green tea extracts help to smooth fine lines. White mulberry brightens the skin to reveal a more even, radiant, energised and youthful complexion.

This certified-organic cream is specifically tailored to the needs of mums and mums-to-be. Lightweight yet ultra-hydrating, the powerful formulation soothes and nourishes, reduces the risk of break-outs, accelerates cell recovery, diminishes pigmentation and helps to improve overall skin texture. Safety approved for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

keep your little one safe in the sun

If you’re planning a sun filled holiday, or you’re simply just hoping that the sun will show it’s its face at some point this summer, it is imperative to be sun safe. Children who get sunburned in childhood or adolescence are at an increased risk of melanoma (the most serious form of skin cancer) in later life. Take precautions protect your children now and into in the future.

Here are 10 of our top sun safety tips:

Babies up to 6 months ideally should not be exposed to direct sunlight as they have much thinner skin and underdeveloped melanin. Cover their arms and legs with clothing while out and about. Use mesh screens on car windows.

The best time to take young children outside is before 10 am and after 4 pm when the sun is not as intense. Ensure they wear wide-brimmed hats, and consider investing in a parasol or a special cover for the buggy. Some newer designs, such as the Uppababy Vista, will already have a special UV protection cover installed in the hood of the pram.

Young, sensitive skin is especially vulnerable to damaging UV rays. Use a broad-spectrum sun cream that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, making sure to cover all exposed areas.

Experts recommend an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 30 for children, but the higher the SPF, the better. Most sun protection for children has SPF 50.

Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before going outside. It’s worth doing a patch test to check if your child is allergic to a particular cream.

Generously re-apply sun protection every 2 hours.

When using a spray suncream, do not spray directly onto the your child’s face. Instead, use your hands for thorough application.

Take care in cloudy weather – up to 90% of UV rays can pass through light cloud. Be familiar with the UV index, which measures the risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure. This can be checked on most weather apps.

If your children are in someone else’s care, make sure you send sun cream with them and  ask that their carer re-applies at regular intervals.

Children learn from example, so let them see you apply sun cream to your own skin too!

Protect the delicate skin of your precious little ones now and instil lifelong sun safety skills that they will carry with them into adulthood.

bonding with baby at bathtime

Bathing your little one can be a magical experience and help nurture early bonds. Here at Little Butterfly London, we believe that life is a gift to be treasured and enjoyed. That special time when your belly is growing, those precious moments gazing at your little one … we want to contribute with skincare that goes beyond cleansing and conditioning to bring pleasure and lift the mood.

For some mums and dads, bonding with their baby is instant – like a flipped switch. But for others, a deep, loving bond is built gradually through day-to-day activities, like feeding, cuddling and bathing. Your baby’s first bath is a special milestone for both of you, as well as the ideal chance to bond.

bathtub bonding

Skin-on-skin contact with your baby can help you bond – like the first time your newborn is placed on your chest – so washing your little one is the perfect time to make a connection. You’ll need to watch your baby at all times for safety – but maintaining eye contact and smiling as you wash them will help them feel relaxed and calm in the water, as does talking and singing to them. Try using our luxurious creamy ‘floating on clouds bedtime bath milk’ that caresses and relaxes delicate skin as it nourishes both yourself and your little one with nourishing buttermilk and comforting oat kernel extract.

bonding with dad

In the early days, there are plenty of chances for mum to bond with her newborn through skin-to-skin contact, especially if breastfeeding. Bathtime is an opportunity for your partner to feel part of this memorable time by spending some precious moments bonding too. Our ‘bubbles in the breeze top to toe wash’ is a fun alternative to our bath milk as it creates a light and fragrant bubble bath for dad and baby to enjoy. Our organic-certified top to toe wash gently cleanses both body and hair, whilst creating a delicately fragrant bath. Beautifully mild and soothing, it gently cares for the even most delicate, dry and irritation-prone skin.

post-bath massage

Once your little one is dry and warm after their bath, a good way to extend this bonding time is to try baby massage using our 100 % organic ‘love eternal baby massage oil’ which is packed full of nourishing peach, protective rosehip and healing calendula oil. Lovingly stroking your baby is an amazing way to bond – it can help you feel closer to each other, and there are lots of other benefits too. Find a local baby massage class to learn the proper techniques – it’s also a great way to meet other new parents in your area.

start a routine

When your newborn is very young, a bath two or three times a week is enough. Once they’re a couple of months old, bathing becomes an important part of your daily routine – a bath in the evening relaxes babies and toddlers before bed and helps them distinguish between day and night by becoming a signal that it’s time for baby to sleep.

can I bathe with my baby?

You or your partner can have a bath with your baby once they’re around two months old. It’s a safe and very bonding experience, although always make sure you have someone else on hand to hold the baby while you get in and out.

daylight savings – how to keep your baby sleeping through

This Sunday, March 25th 2018, the clocks ‘spring’ forward, which means we lose an extra hour in bed – but is that really the truth as a parent? It seems that just a one hour change can dramatically affect sleeping habits in babies, which is not what parents what to hear at all. The daylight saving doesn’t have to mean sleepless nights and endless cups of caffeine, as you can take a few steps to keep your little one snoozing through the winter.

1) Start making changes as soon as possible
Move your baby’s bedtime and napping times forward by 15 minutes. By doing this you are starting to prepare their body clock for the change that is to come. You can also adjust their feeding times in conjunction with this so that their whole schedule is consistent.

2) Regulate the light
Establishing day and night for your little one helps them to understand when it’s time to start feeling sleepy. Due to the light changing, you can use blackout blinds to make it dark at the right time, and light to allow their brain to understand it’s daytime.

3) Build the right environment
An overstimulating environment can lead to baby feeling awake, and not wanting to sleep at all. Before bedtime make sure everything you do is very calming – from the rooms you are in, to the tone of voice you use. Create a soothing time just before bed to help them relax.

4) Dress baby softly to sleep
Really soft bedding and clothing makes a difference to how well your baby will sleep. They love very soft and gentle bedding, which you can also ensure smells of you to keep them content. Dress baby in gentle and breathable clothing to ensure that they feel comfortable and ready to sleep.

5) Remember, you’re doing great!
When your little one isn’t sleeping, sometimes you end up feeling frustrated and disappointed. No matter whether they are sleeping or not, everything will fall into place with time. You are doing an amazing job and eventually, your whole family will be sleeping well.
