'Mummy Spotlight' Q&A with Laura Lacey

Maternal Insights: Q&A with Laura Lacey in the Mummy Spotlight

We are shining the spotlight on Mums because we think they are all amazing!

First up is Laura, Mum to Isla & baby boy on the way, answering some of our questions on family life and the joys and challenges of motherhood.

How has motherhood surprised you?

I found the newborn stage with Isla really difficult and I wasn’t expecting that. She had tongue tie and didn’t really sleep until she was 16 months. I think we talk about lack of sleep as parents but not actually how severe it can be and how it does have a huge impact on you. So I was surprised by just how much sleep effected me - I did all sorts of sleep deprived things like going shopping and leaving the car doors wide open!

What is a typical day like for you and your family?

I work part time so on those days Isla goes to a mixture of nursery and childminder. On my days off it’s just me and Isla, we were always at baby groups and soft play before lockdown but since we have embraced more time at home and exploring locally. Isla loves walks and trips to the park but is also just as happy in our play room so we do a mixture of all most days.

What is the biggest challenge when it comes to motherhood?

It has to be balancing everyone’s needs! I work part time as a social worker so my days are pretty full on and then to come home and deal with toddler tantrums can be hard work. I find making time for self care difficult but it’s so important to try and get those few minutes a day where you can.

What is the biggest joy?

Watching Isla learn new things and develop has been my biggest joy. She’s at an age now where she does something new everyday and my heart could burst with how proud she makes me.

Best piece of advice you have been given or would give to a new mum?

The advice I would give to a new mum is to take each day as it comes. Some days you achieve lots & are on top of it all, some days you might only manage to keep everyone fed and that is fine as well!

Favourite Little Butterfly London product?

Definitely the cocoon of bliss stretch mark butter - it smells amazing & is perfect for my growing bump.
